The mountains were calling again and so were their fall colours. Pre-Diwali, I left home with a wish to witness the striking autumn in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. The tentative plan was to start an over-a-month-long sojourn in Himachal Pradesh and enter Jammu & Kashmir through the hair-raising Keylong-Killar-Kishtwar route. Little did I know this plan would take its course, I would meet a life-threatening accident in the Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP), I will return home way too early with six stitches on my head, and a crazy story I will be narrating for a long time in this lifetime.
I was in Tirthan Valley, and the trek to the GHNP gate from the quaint village of Gushaini is one of the best things to do here. This treacherous 8km trek ascends 500 meters through the thick forests and deep valley created by the mighty Tirthan river. Not an easy trek, and the budding trekker in me was all set to undertake this challenge. Personally, this was one of the first major treks I was going to do in Himachal Pradesh on my own. I have some prior experience trekking various day hikes in Uttarakhand and South America. But I had underestimated this GHNP trek.
